Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is an asthma & respiratory autoimmune disorder that affects the nose and sinuses. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common medical conditions worldwide, reported to affect almost 12% of the adult population.
What exactly is CRSwNP and what causes it? How is it treated and what can you do to manage your symptoms? In this blog post, we'll break down everything you need to know about living with this condition, including how a specialty pharmacy can help. Please consult with your physician for the best treatment course for you.
About 20% of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) have nasal polyps, benign growths in the nasal cavities, that are thought to originate from the ethmoid sinuses. Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is an asthma & respiratory autoimmune disorder (like Sarcoidosis, SSc-ILD and Chronic Asthma) that affects the nose and sinuses.
It is characterized by ongoing inflammation of the tissue in the nose and sinuses, as well as the growth of small, fleshy growths called nasal polyps. These polyps can block airways and lead to a range of symptoms, including difficulty breathing through your nose, a stuffy or blocked feeling in your nose, facial pain or pressure, headaches, loss of smell or taste, snoring, and frequent sinus infections.
Both CRSsNP and CRSwNP are associated with premorbid autoimmune diseases.
The exact cause of CRSwNP is not known. However, it has been linked to allergies and asthma. Additionally, researchers believe that genetics may play a role in some cases of CRSwNP.
The goal of treatment for CRSwNP is to reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms. This typically involves a combination of medications such as decongestants, antihistamines (for allergies), corticosteroids (for inflammation), antibiotics (for infection), antifungal medicines (for fungal infection), immunotherapy (allergy shots), and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Surgery may also be recommended in some cases to remove nasal polyps or open up blocked airways.
Living with CRSwNP can be difficult but there are ways to manage your symptoms effectively. It's important to stay informed on the condition so you know what treatments are available to help manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life overall. If you've been diagnosed with CRSwNP or suspect that you might have it, talk to your healthcare provider about treatment options so you can get relief from your symptoms quickly and safely.
