As the largest national independent full-service specialty pharmacy in the U.S. accredited by URAC, ACHC, and NABP, Senderra is committed to providing the highest-quality specialty pharmacy care to patients with complex medical conditions such as asthma, cancer, endocrine disorders, hemophilia, hepatitis C, immune system disorders, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, and many others. With that commitment in mind, Senderra is also dedicated to training future specialty pharmacy leaders and equipping these pharmacists with the skills and capabilities to continue to drive specialty pharmacy practice forward and improve patient outcomes.
The Senderra Specialty Pharmacy PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency is a 12-month post-graduate training program that offers a unique, comprehensive learning and work experience that provides residents with the knowledge and skills to become confident clinicians and future leaders in the specialty pharmacy industry. Based in Dallas, Texas, the pharmacy resident will participate in a variety of rotations to strengthen skills in specialty pharmacy practice management, provide high-touch clinical care to complex patient populations, and serve as a leader amongst multidisciplinary specialty pharmacy professionals.
Program Purpose
The Senderra PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Whether residents are interested in obtaining their Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP) credential, pursuing a PGY2 specialty pharmacy focused residency, or pursuing other advanced training and career opportunities, the Senderra program provides graduates with the skills to become confident clinicians and well-rounded pharmacy leaders that are prepared to pursue a wide range of pharmacy careers.
Program Experience
Here's what to expect.
Throughout the year, residents complete a variety of learning experiences in a dynamic specialty pharmacy environment to gain advanced clinical, operational, and leadership skills. Senderra’s dedicated preceptors support the resident through structured learning experiences like those highlighted below, and provide flexible, individualized mentorship to support each resident’s unique interests and learning needs.
Whether residents are recent graduates embarking on their career as a pharmacist for the first time or are entering the program with previous pharmacist experience, transitioning into a new role can be daunting. The orientation rotation will introduce the resident to the organization, team members, and environment they will be working in throughout the year. In addition to completing standard onboarding and training, the resident will work closely with their preceptor during this rotation to establish personalized goals and an ongoing practice of self-assessment to setup their year for success.
After completing orientation, residents will embark on a focused clinical training to understand clinical pharmacist workflows and build a strong pharmacotherapy foundation for the complex medications and disease states that Senderra supports. With specialty pharmacy constantly evolving and being consistently on the brink of innovation, the rotation will also provide several opportunities for residents to work through drug information questions and establish a systematic approach to answering drug inquiries.
Caring for patients is at the core of all we do. Throughout these rotations, the resident will engage in disease state and medication management activities across a variety of therapeutic areas, such as those noted below. With these focused experiences, residents will provide patient education, conduct initial and ongoing assessments, consult providers when potential therapy issues are identified, and work as an integral part of the care team to support safe, effective treatment that helps patients reach their individualized goals.
Much like the complex conditions that specialty medications treat, specialty pharmacy practice is complex and requires collaboration with many different internal and external stakeholders. During the administration rotation, residents will have an opportunity to build their leadership skills as they work on numerous projects as part of a cross-functional team in areas such as:
Building upon the clinical and operational experiences earlier in the year, these rotations provide residents with the opportunity to continue to practice more and more independently as the year progresses. Through supporting dispensing and clinical pharmacist staffing needs, residents will have ongoing opportunities to hone their skills as a pharmacist and build confidence in their ability to oversee the patient care process.
Through participation in the year-long University of North Texas Health Science Center College of Pharmacy post-Graduate Teaching and Learning Certificate (TLC) Program, residents will attend workshop sessions and gain hands-on experiences to develop teaching, precepting, and practice development skills. With no participation from residents across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, the experience also provides a unique opportunity to network with other pharmacy residents across the region. Click here to learn more about the TLC Program.
Residents will be allotted time throughout the course of this longitudinal rotation to work with their preceptor to identify a research question, develop, and implement a project plan, analyze the results, and present findings at industry events (e.g., ASHP Midyear, Alcadlde Southwest Leadership Conference) to advance the practice and highlight the value of specialty pharmacy care.
